Unschooler Interview on NPR
By Leaping, on June 15th, 2011
All Things Considered on NPR interviewed a 16 year-old unschooler from California.
Here’s a brief except:
Unschooling is like home schooling, except entirely self-directed, with lots of support from my parents. When I got my first allowance of $2.50 a week, I remember calculating how long I’d have to save up to buy my next toy. Everything I’ve ever learned has been for a practical purpose or because I was interested, never for a test or because someone made me.

Unschooling sounds like a novel approach to child education, though I also think that interaction with children and adults is important. As long as there’s a happy balance, I can see the value.
Unschooling is all about interaction between the adult and child. The adult has be to even more engaged in the child’s life in order to provide resources, assistance, guidance, etc., as needed. So many think unschooling means just turning the child loose and never paying any attention to them, but that is definitely not the case. Thanks for your comment, Janet!
