Unschooling Summer Camps

If you are looking for a way to connect with other unschoolers, here are three summer camp options to check out.

Not Back to School Camp is the original unschoolers camp begun by Grace Llewellyn, author of The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education. They have been providing summer camp opportunities for unschoolers since 1996. In 2011 they have scheduled two summer camp sessions in Oregon and two in Vermont.

A new option is the East Tennessee Unschooled Summer Camp, which has a session scheduled for August 14 – 21, 2011. 2010 was their first year of operation. You can read a review of the East Tennessee Unschooled Summer Camp at A Dispatch From Planet Unschooling.

If you have participated in one of these camps in the past, please share your thoughts and experiences with us.

  • Hi there!

If you are interested, my friends and I put on a small, affordable unschool camp for teens in southern vermont. It’s called summer skool, and i listed its website on your form above. It’s only its second year, and we’re looking to get the word out. You seem like an awesome resource. We’d love it if you’d let your readers know about us.

    Thanks!

    Howdy,

I’m a NBTSC alum which is now approaching its 20th year of operation. Fantastic camp, and to this day — I’m 26 now — some of my closest friends are folks I met at Not Back to School Camp. I highly recommend it for any teenager: whether they be homeschooled, unschooled, or just stuck in middle or high school and looking for a way out. Not many other adults I know keep in touch with friends from when they were 13-19, let alone continue to count them as friends whom enrich their life.

The power of meeting and being surrounded by 100 other energetic, curious, kind teenagers for a week each year is something I would wish for every adolescent as they begin to forge their own life and expand beyond their family of birth.

    -Mike H.
